Twelve Guyanese have been awarded scholarships to China for the year 2022 and will soon head off to further their studies at  universities there.

According to the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, out of the 12 awardees, seven will be studying medicine in different specialties, while the others will major in courses such as finance, politics and education.

The awardees were yesterday handed their certificate of approval during a ceremony held at the Chinese Embassy on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The ambassador noted that the Government of China has awarded some 213 scholarships to Guyanese across the length and breadth of the country. She explained that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, classes were being held online, however, with a let up in the spread of the virus, the 2022 awardees will be travelling to China where they will be involved in physical classes as well as virtual ones.

While congratulating the recipients, Haiyan said that the scholarship will be an opportunity for the students to travel and explore the country and she encouraged them to take full advantage of the opportunity as she revealed that they soon will be eligible to apply for their visas for China.

Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Forbes July, expounded on the close relationship between Guyana and China.
