The signing yesterday of contracts for roads leading to the Capoey and Mainstay lakes on the Essequibo Coast is expected to boost tourism and improve conditions for those living in the vicinity.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh witnessed the signing of the contracts.

The Capoey Lake main road will be upgraded at a cost of $219m. The contract was signed between the Ministry of Public Works and Technocon Investments. The project will see 3,000 metres of road upgraded to asphaltic concrete, road edge markings and speed humps.

Speaking to residents, Singh said that the project is expected to reduce the travelling time and cost of transportation for children and residents living in the area. The road is also used by farmers in the community.

Singh also witnessed the signing of another contract for the upgrading of the main access road between the Essequibo Technical Institute and Chinese Lock.

This project will cost $256 million and will include the upgrading of 3,400 metres of road to asphaltic concrete, road edge markings and speed humps.

The road will benefit students and residents from Mainstay/Whyaka Village,  Lima Sands Housing Scheme  and Tapakuma. The upgraded road will also lead to the Mainstay resort.

“This is something we want long. When we tell them drivers to drop we they don’t want to cause the road bad, we are happy”, Surendra Persaud, a resident from Lima Sands related.

These requests were made by residents during President Irfaan Ali’s visit to the region on May, 25, 2022.
