Contradictions in the new economy

Dear Editor,

Priorities have been reshuffled and resulted in confusing our citizens. Layoffs occurring in an industry that is being saved, Guyanese being placed a level below Trinidadians on lucrative contracts in our own country, basic food items too expensive to purchase and larger roads being constructed while current ones are in disrepair. All of this going on while money is being handed out across the country where blackouts are still occurring and flooding is more frequent. Usually, when votes are attained from supporters, they should be able to rest assured that they will not need to worry about the prosperity of their future. We must not lose sight of this and set the priorities of where money is spent in the correct light. An election will be won by strengthening the support received, and this support is strengthened by easing and removing the difficulties faced by citizens, especially when it is appreciated and remembered in a positive light. Growth and investment can be controlled via timing to align with the resources available. There is no rush to force the growth while the funds increase with prudent investments.

Resetting of priorities and improving the lives of those who appreciate the improvements will help ensure that the limited funds are used wisely and in a way which citizens truly appreciate it. Listening comes before effective directed action. Our current government’s outreach has been good at this and better than the previous one, but there is room for continual improvement. The goal is no longer to be better than the competition once surpassed. The goal now becomes being best in class versus external higher standards in areas that are of the utmost importance to our citizens.
