Why is the government not pushing for a refinery?

Dear Editor,

So Guyana has oil. And we are exporting same as crude. We have top quality and we are exporting it. Why do we have to keep being a primary product exporting country?

Now I am no economist but having an oil refinery in Guyana would be so transforming for Guyana. From my readings I have become aware that we can also get fertilizer and asphalt and so many other products and we could really use the fertilizer and asphalt.

We are importing fuel and I am sure the transportation cost would be high so if we refine oil here it would be cheaper for the Guyanese people and bring down the cost of production and manufacturing in general.

Guyana gets a percentage of the crude so if the Guyana government sells the crude at market price to the local refinery the cost of transportation of the crude would be less that when it is shipped overseas to other refineries and so is this not an advantage for the local refinery.

Why is the government not pushing for a refinery? Why is the government not pushing the idea for the private sector to build one?

Yours faithfully,
