A Nigerian national was yesterday remanded to prison while his alleged accomplice was released on $100,000 bail after they were both charged with attempting to commit a felony.

Matthew Ejike Nwachukwu of Nigeria, and Wayne Anthony Halley of Linden, both appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.

It is alleged that the defendants, between August 20 and 29, at George-town, with intent to defraud, conspired with each other to defraud Njema Nobel of $100,000 in cash, by falsely pretending that they were in a position to deliver a package to her.

The duo pleaded not guilty to the charge and bail was granted to Halley in the sum of $100,000. However, prosecutor Christopher Morris objected to bail for Nwachukwu, due to the fact that he is not Guyanese and that he might be a flight risk and not return to court.

As such, Nwachukwu was remanded to prison while Halley was ordered to report to the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) headquarters every Monday until the conclusion of the case.

The matter has been adjourned to October 25.
