Convicted Nigerian, accomplice charged over ‘romance scam’

A convicted Nigerian national has been remanded to prison while his accomplice was released on $300,000 bail after they were both charged with attempting to defraud a woman through the delivery of an overseas package.

Dwayne Frank, 30, of Tabatinga, Central Rupununi, and Matthew Ejike Nwachukwu, 37, of Duncan Street, Kitty, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Alisha George where they were both charged with seven counts conspiracy to defraud.

Both men pleaded not guilty.

Nwachukwu was unrepresented while Frank was represented by attorney-at-law S. Martin.

Nwachukwu is currently serving a 24-month prison sentence on a similar charge. He is said to be one of the masterminds of the ‘romance scam scheme’.

They are expected to make their next court appearance on August 9.
