Nigerian national, accomplice charged with conspiracy to defraud

Two men, one of whom is a Nigerian national, were on Wednesday charged with  conspiracy to defraud a woman.

Nzube Zkegwuonu, 30, a Nigerian national and 25-year-old Kevin Smith, an entrepreneur of Melanie, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts where they were not required to plead to the charge.

It is alleged that between February 1 and March 15, at Georgetown, they conspired with persons to obtain $3,000,000 from Denita Bonnet.

The two were represented by attorney-at-law Ronald Daniels who told the court that his clients are innocent and are currently out on $100,000 station bail. He further stated that because of the sum of the station bail, he is asking that should the court grant bail, it be a smaller amount. The attorney also said that Zkegwuonu is a Nigerian who is married to a Guyanese and is currently awaiting his citizenship.

The police prosecutor showed no objection to bail but requested that conditions be attached. He requested that the pair report to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters twice each month and that they lodge their passports with the court.

The two were placed on $100,000 bail each and the conditions were applied.

The matter was adjourned to April 14.
