In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Office of the First Lady in partnership with Impressions Branding and the Guyana Cancer Foundation hosted a tree wrapping exercise in the avenue of Main Street yesterday.

First Lady, Arya Ali said that she used the opportunity to recommit her support in the fight against the disease by sponsoring mammograms for another 50 women. So far, her Office has sponsored mammograms for 100 women.

A release yesterday from the Office of the First Lady said that in 2020, breast cancer deaths in Guyana reached 96 or 1.34 percent of total deaths, while the age adjusted death rate was 25.5 per 100,000 of the population which ranked Guyana 23 in the world.

The WHO says when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the five-year relative survival rate is 99 percent. This is why early testing is important, the release said.

“So we need to continue our advocacy and mobilize resources to support testing; because of the difference that early detection makes.  It is my hope that we continue to stand on the shoulders of those victims and survivors of breast cancer and continue the great work that has started”, the First Lady said.
