A self-employed building contractor was yesterday placed on $200,000 bail after she was charged with forging an irrevocable power of attorney in order to sell a property.

Forty-eight-year-old Michelle Rambarran of Lot 06 Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. She denied the charge that was read to her.

The charge states that on November 22, 2021 in Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she forged one irrevocable power of attorney number, purporting to show that same was signed by Patrick Ramnauth.

Prosecutor Dinero Jones yesterday told the court that the virtual complainant (VC) who is Ramnauth, lives in the United States and has a property in Campbellville, Georgetown. In the year 2005, Rambarran had visited the VC in the US, where he eventually gave her the power of attorney for the said property, but it was never lodged at the Deeds Registry.

She then sold the property to the proprietor of Star Party Rental, Lennox Cush.

The defendant’s attorney, Dennis Hall, however argued that the issue was based on whether or not his client was aware of her authority,  which he said she wasn’t. He also argued that the police were not familiar with the legal documents that Rambarran has in her possession.

The woman was then granted $200,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until October 19 for statements.
