In an effort to make the roads safer, ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Department have embarked on ‘Operation Safe Road,’ which has already led to the arrest of several drivers for violation of various traffic related offences over the past few days.

In a recent press release, the GPF said the traffic ranks have been “rigorously” enforcing the laws in all the policing division under the “stringent and proactive” road safety campaign.

To date, the police said about 30 drivers were taken into custody in regions 3 and 7 for breach of offences, including prohibition of tinted glass, breach of condition of road service licence, obscured ID mark, breach of condition of prescribed fitness, failure to produce driver’s licence, having an uncertified motor vehicle and motor vehicle causing obstruction.

Other common related offences include speeding, failing to wear seat belts, having an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to conform to traffic signs, careless driving and breach of traffic lights.

In addition to the arrests, a number of vehicles, including minibuses, trucks and cars, were also impounded, the police said.

According to the police, the aim of the campaign is to enforce the law to make the roads safer for motorists, commuters, pedestrians and the general public.
