Women & Gender Equality Commission `utterly dismayed’ at Persaud’s conduct

The Women & Gender Equality Commission on Wednesday expressed its utter dismay at the recent social media report which featured  Charrandass Persaud, the  High Commissioner to India, who was seen and heard abusing a woman “in a most vile and disgusting way.”

In a press release, the Commission looked askance at the fact that the incident which purportedly took place since August 2021, has only now been made public. And even more “tragic”, it remarked, is the action reported in the press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation stating that “the matter had been investigated and is now closed.”

Such a response, opined the Commission, “was clearly not well thought out.”

However, it commended the “swift and decisive action” of President Irfaan Ali who it said recalled Persaud from his post with immediate effect, while noting, “The actions of this one individual at the level he served our country has tarnished us as a nation.”

According to the release, Guyana has had a rich and distinguished history of diplomatic representation at the global level.

“Never before has any country representative behaved in such a manner as to cause us such embarrassment. It is time to remind those who represent our country that we are judged by the way they act and carry themselves. The way in which we conduct and carry on our public and personal life must be exemplary in thought and deed”, it said.
