Bloomfield woman succumbs to chop injuries, husband held

A Bloomfield, Corentyne woman is now dead after she reportedly succumbed to chop injuries sustained sometime around Sunday evening during a fight with her husband after she accused him of being unfaithful to her.

Dead is Oma Davi Virasamy, 30, a housewife of Lot 171 Bloomfield, New Housing Scheme, Corentyne. Her husband, Mahendra Paltoo, 35 years, a labourer, of the same address was arrested for questioning.

According to information gathered, Paltoo initially claimed that on Sunday evening the deceased was making up the bed for their baby when she slipped and fell on a cutlass that was between two mattresses in their bedroom.

He told investigators that he assisted her by dressing the wound she sustained on her ankle and she later went to bed. However, he woke up at about 4.40 am yesterday morning and observed her body motionless on the bed after which an alarm was raised.

However, after further investigations, the man eventually told police that he and his wife had an argument on Sunday evening after she accused him of being unfaithful since he collected a bottle of vodka from a female neighbor.

He said, during the argument, he armed himself with a cutlass and dealt her lashes about her body. She reportedly sustained injuries to her face, under her left eye, and ankle.

Residents in the area yesterday expressed shock at the incident as they relayed that the couple was always very quiet and stayed mostly indoors. Furthermore, as of yesterday neighbors were still trying to make contact with the deceased’s relatives.

According to the neighbors, it was only around 7 am yesterday, that they became aware that the woman had died. As of yesterday afternoon, they were still unsure as to what had transpired. However, one neighbor close by recalled hearing the couple fighting on Sunday evening.

Investigators in Region Six are continuing the investigation, as the man remains in police custodypost-mortemrtem examination is expected to be carried out before the end of the week.
