Twenty-six-year-old Ashford Adams, who is a Prison Officer attached to the Georgetown Prisons, was remanded yesterday on the charge of possession of narcotics.

Adams of Canal #1 on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD) yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus who read the charge to him.  According to the charge, it is alleged that Adams on November 3rd at the Georgetown Prison, had in his possession 22.5 grams of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Adams pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned until December 13th for statements.

The court heard that on the day in question, at about 07:30hrs, other ranks of the Guyana Prison Service, acting on information received, carried out a search on Adams who had just entered the compound to commence duties. During the search, the said narcotics, along with a quantity of tobacco leaves were found in his shoes, concealed in plastic. The Prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the narcotic was found directly on Adams while he was on duty and also that he is a serving member of the Guyana Prison Service and as such “he should have known better.”
