Three men held after CANU bust at Springlands

A sixty-four-year-old taxi driver is among three persons who were arrested by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) last week after a narcotics bust.

The drug enforcement unit last night said that while ranks were on an operation at the Springlands Public Road Corentyne, Berbice, they became suspicious of a silver-grey vehicle parked on the said public road.

As a result, ranks approached the vehicle but even though several individuals within the vicinity were questioned, no one claimed ownership or identified the driver of the said vehicle.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed several parcels of suspected cannabis in two salt bags. The vehicle with the narcotics was escorted to the CANU Office in Skeldon, Corentyne, Berbice.

The release stated that on Friday, November 18, Stuart Hamer, a taxi driver of #77 village housing scheme visited the Springlands Police Station and claimed ownership of the vehicle.

He told investigators that he was hired by two men to transport the narcotics to Corentyne. As a result, ranks from the Springlands Police Station arrested Jeremiah Smith, 18, and Damion Hinds, 42, who were then turned over to CANU.

The suspected cannabis was weighed and tested in the presence of the three suspects, where it tested positive for cannabis and weighed a total of 40 kg. It has a street value of approximately $5 million.
