Missigher, Harvey run away with SA 10k Classic spoils

Winston Missigher and Attoya Harvey are your 2022 South American senior 10k Classic champions.

The two athletes were triumphant in the local leg of the 20th edition of the event staged yesterday from Montrose on the East Coast of Demerara to the National Park.

Missigher clocked 32m: 25.9s for the fixture which was held in cool, overcast conditions.

Suriname’s Janiek Pomba and Odwin Tudor joined him on the podium while Marlon Nicholson and Matthew Gordon filled out the top five rewarding positions.

Harvey, 16, crossed the tape in 41m: 57.7s with Abidemi Charles and Joanna Archer earning the silver and bronze medals.

Tia Azore and Jelese Wright completed the top five.

For their heroics on the asphalt, Missigher and Harvey were presented with precious metal, real gold medals made with Guyana’s world renowned gold. They also earned the first place cash winnings. 

Understandably, the winning duo was ecstatic.

Said Missigher, 33, who lost his three previous road race starts for 2022, “I feel real good, I am grateful for this win.” Missigher who won the event back in 2020 on the West Coast of Demerara, added that he was hearing rumors that he “fell off” but his first signature win for the year has proven the doubters wrong.

He looks forward to building on the end of season win for a strong start to his 2023 campaign.

Harvey mentioned that she was happy to win the event and she was confident of climbing the top podium step prior to the start. Meanwhile, later in the day, they were races for the junior inside the park. Up to press time, the official results were still unknown

Notes: The first two legs of the annual event was staged in Suriname and Panama. President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson dubbed the Classic which was sponsored by Fitness Express, Banks DIH Limited and the Guyana Olympic Association a resounding success.
