Grateful if the President can similarly revise upwards the salaries of the Guyana Prison Service and City Constabulary

Dear Editor,

I noted in a section of the print media on Thursday, November 24, 2022 that HE President Irfaan Ali announced sweeping changes to the salaries of several categories of workers in the Disciplined Services namely the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS). The increases will take effect from January 1, 2023. This is commendable.

On behalf of my fellow colleagues in the Disciplined Services, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the President personally for the increases in salaries. While I am pleased with that I do have one concern. I note that the President made no mention of a salary increase for the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) that provide safe custody of offenders who have violated the law of the land, nor the City Constabulary which is responsible for policing the 15-square mile capital city with its approximately 180,000 citizens. This is in addition to the 200,000 persons who visit the city on a daily basis for business, entertainment or otherwise.

Editor, members of the Guyana Prison Service and the City Constabulary work hard to ensure that law and order is maintained in our country, just like the other Disciplined Services.

I will be very grateful if HE can kindly grant us an increase in our salaries with conditions similar as those announced for the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS).

Sincerely,
