Parkinson, Lanis storm to 10K gold medals

Odida Parkinson and Judy Lanis earned the respective gold medals in the Open boys and girls 10k road races of this year’s National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships which got underway yesterday.

In the event which was staged from Mary to the National Track and Field Centre at Edinburgh, the two athletes were in a class of their own, soloing across the line for commanding victories in the race which was staged in a light drizzle. Parkinson, of District 3 (West Demerara), finished the event in a respectable 36:48.23s while Lanis, of District 9, ran to victory in 44:21.90s.

Parkinson led Kiene Wadkar of District 5 and Ledjuan Hensford of District 10 onto the podium.

Wadkar clocked 37:21.88s while Hensford recorded a time of 37:49.03s.

Odiessa George of District Six finished in second in 46:28.43s while Parkinson’s District mate, Rosamond Harvey snared the bronze in 49:24.21s.

Track and Field action in this year’s ‘Nationals’ which returns from a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, continues on Wednesday at the National Track and Field Centre. Swimming and cycling is set to take centre stage today at the National Aquatic Centre and the National Park from 09:00hrs. (Emmerson Campbell)
