Trinidad roti shop owner stabbed to death, Guyanese in custody

(Trinidad Guardian) Dopson’s Roti Shop on Maraval Road in Newtown will remain closed until further notice following the murder of owner Jason “Dobby” Dopson.

The 26-year-old, of Canaan Drive, Chase Village, Chaguanas, died on Sunday after he was reportedly stabbed by a Guyanese national.

Reports indicate that Dopson was in the carpark of the Gemini Bar in Edinburgh when he allegedly got into an argument with the suspect, 36, around 8.45 am.

It is alleged the foreign national stabbed Dopson during the altercation. He was later found bleeding and taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility and transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officers from the Central Division Task Force later detained the suspect at the scene. He remained in police custody up to yesterday.

Officers from the Homicide Bureau Region III are continuing enquiries.

As word of Dopson’s death spread on Sunday, scores of friends and customers took to social media expressing shock and posting condolence messages and offering words of comfort and prayer to his family.

The popular roti shop, which is ranked among the top places to buy curry, notified the nation via its Facebook page that Dopson’s would be closed until further notice.

At around 8.39 am yesterday, shop officials wrote, “Dear Customers, we have lost a great pillar of our business on Sunday November 27, 2022. It is with such great sadness we would be taking some time to grieve and process the loss of Jason Dopson. May his soul Rest in Peace. We will be back with a date of reopening soon.”
