Several families were yesterday morning left with damage to their houses after a sudden heavy wind ripped through Number 9 Village, West Coast Berbice.

According to information gathered, some four houses sustained damage due to the 6 am wind. While most of the properties suffered destruction to the lower sheds, a family of four lost the roof of their house.

Angelica Laltoo, 27, of Number 9 Village, explained, that her entire roof was blown away by the sudden gusty wind sometime around 6 am yesterday.

The woman who was in a state of shock yesterday noted that they were sleeping when she first heard a loud sound.

Seconds after, sheets from the woman’s roof began flying off resulting in her grabbing her children and exiting the house quickly.

As the family got outside, Laltoo said that the roof collapsed along with the electrical wires which were connected to it.

But her worries did not end there, as a heavy shower which followed soaked them and damaged her household items.

The emotional woman yesterday could not estimate her losses but noting that she recently spent a sum of money to carpet and decorate her house in time for the holiday season.

PPP/C Member of Parliament Faizal Jafarally yesterday morning visited the affected residents. He said, materials were donated to Laltoo to have her roof fixed so as to ensure her family can return to the house at the earliest possible time.

Other residents also picked up the sheets  blown off of their roofs and nailed them back down.
