Law enforcement officials in Suriname last week arrested Guyanese national, Kevin Carter in connection with the murder of a Chinese shopkeeper there.

Carter is also wanted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for questioning in relation to the murder of martial arts instructor and bodyguard, Garfield Newton who was shot during a robbery on Christmas Eve, 2021 after visiting a goldsmith in Georgetown.

Days after the murder, the GPF had issued a wanted bulletin for him.

According to a Waterkant news agency report, Carter was arrested by Surinamese police during last week in connection with the murder of Chinese shopkeeper, Pandit Paltan Tewarieweg.

The report said prior to Carter’s arrest, a total of six men were taken into custody for the said crime. Four of the suspects are Guyanese, it noted.

According to the report, background checks were made on the suspects during which it was revealed that Carter and one other Guyanese who was arrested is wanted here by the police. “Carter for a series of robberies and other crimes and the other Guyanese man for several robberies,” it said.

A seventh suspect, the report said was also detained as part of the investigation but he was shot dead about two weeks ago.

Just over a week ago, authorities in Suriname handed over prison escapee Paul Goriah to local law enforcement authorities.

Goriah was captured back in June, 2020 by Surinamese authorities. He was a suspect in an attempted robbery there.
