NSC lauds 2023 budget

The National Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday praised glowingly, the allocation for the sport sector in this year’s budget adding that under the Honourable Minister of Sports Charles Ramson Jnr., sport in Guyana is on a path which will transform it forever.

On Monday in the 2023 National Budget speech, presented by the distinguished Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, the sport sector received the  largest-ever allocation in the history of the country, a whopping $4.3B, a  substantial increase of $1.1B from last year’s allocation.

“This unprecedented allocation must be extolled as it highlights, inter alia,  His Excellency President Irfaan Ali government’s continued commitment, vision, and direction for the development of sports and sportsmen and women,” the press release from the National Sports Commission stated.

“With the largest ever allocation for the National Sports Commission, Budget 2023 paves the way for the Government’s continued transformation in our sports facilities – something that is critical to the development of world-class athletes and the hosting of international tournaments – which would have commenced in the previous year,” the release added.

Singh, during Monday’s budget speech had declared, “2023 bodes even better and more brightly than 2022 for sport investment in Guyana.”

He said that funds had been set aside for a National Cricket Academy with the construction of the State of the Art stadium at Palmyra, Fyrish, Berbice this year.

Singh also stated that provision was being made for other sports infrastructure and development including the construction of multi-purpose facilities in the Hinterland, rehabilitation works at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, construction of stands and grass mounds in Regions 2 and 6, extension of the Squash Courts at the Racquet Centre and Procurement of sports gear.

The NSC added that the money will spped up the development of sportsmen and women.

“The allocation also allows for the development  of our sportsmen and sportswomen with the National Sports Academy – the first ever in Guyana and the Region – launched last year and has already started to change the landscape of sports in Guyana.”

“The National Sports Commission is of the firm view and unshakeable belief, that with the presented budget and with the leadership of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. (MP), sport is on a pathway that will transform sport in Guyana, forever, the release ended.

The members of the National Sports Commission are Kashif Muhammad, Cristy Campbell, Bissoondyal Singh, Dellon Davidson, Philip Fernandes and Cheteram Ramdial while Steve Ninvalle is the Director of Sport.
