Two remanded over murder of Black Bush Polder couple

Two Black Bush Polder (BBP) men were yesterday remanded over the gruesome murder of a  Yakusari couple who were discovered in their house on Tuesday morning with multiple injuries after a robbery and torching of their premises.

Harichan Persaud also known as ‘Head’, 22, a labourer of Lot 73 Yakusari, BBP and Emanuel Whittington also known as ‘Gaza’, 27, a labourer of Lot 177 Yakusari South, appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranuth Singh where they were charged jointly with the capital offence of murder of both victims.

The charges read that the accused between Monday January 16, 2023 and Tuesday January 17, 2023 at Lot 26 Black Bush Polder murdered Subnauth Budraj, 67, and Sarasuatie Budraj, 60, in the course or furtherance of a robbery. The two unpresented men were not required to enter a plea to the charges and were remanded to prison.  They will return to court on February 7th, for reports.

Subnauth Budraj, also known as “Bull boy”, 67, and Sarasuatie Budraj, also known as “Seeta”, 60, were found murdered in their house just around 4.15 am on Tuesday.

The couple operated a shop and liquor store at the location. Subnauth’s throat was slit and he also sustained several chop injuries on his body. His wife, Sarasuatie sustained several stabs. The knife which was used to inflict injuries to the woman was left stuck in her neck.  The woman’s entire left arm was burnt in the fire.

The post-mortem examinations which were carried out on Thursday revealed that Subnauth died due to inhalation of smoke, shock and haemorrhage, a fractured skull and burn injuries, while his wife died as a result of shock and haemorrhage, a stab wound to the neck and burn injuries. After murdering the couple, the perpetrators set fire to the premises. The fire spread to a bond area and resulted in an explosion and this alerted residents to what was happening.

Investigators had discovered stolen jewellery with the deceased’s man name, cash and phone cards at Whittington’s house.

The two accused, who worked with Subnauth in his rice field, were reportedly imbibing at the man’s shop on Monday evening after which they returned with the intention to rob the couple.
