Eagles’ second innings collapse sets up intriguing final day

Guyana Harpy Eagles were unable to replicate their first innings dominance over Barbados Pride, slipping to 91 for eight in their second innings on day three of their first round clash of the West Indies championships at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

Responding to Eagles’ first innings score of 371, Pride, resuming the day on 105 for three, were eventually rolled over for 220 in 91.2 overs. Eagles then extended their lead to 242 by the close of play with two wickets in hand at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua.

Shamarh Brooks converted his overnight score of 10 to 61 from 141 balls before he was caught by Matthew Nandu off of Veerasammy Permaul. During his 27th half-century, he struck five boundaries.

Brooks shared in a 57-run union for the fourth wicket with nightwatchman, Keon Harding who made 24 from 80 balls before being bowled by Permaul.

Permaul continued his dominance at this level, bagging 4-53. The wicket of Keon Harding was his 500th  for Guyana in Regional four-day Cricket. Permaul received support from Kevin Sinclair with 3-65 and Shamar Joseph (2-33). Shemar Springer was left stranded on 35 not out from 69 balls, hitting four boundaries while  Shane Dowrich was unable to bat.

When Eagles returned to the crease, Tevin Imlach and Kemol Savory failed to score while Anthony Bramble and Sinclair made one run each as the Bajan seamers ripped through the top and middle order.

Nandu, who made 126 in the first innings managed 16 from 77 balls while Chandrapaul Hemraj made 15. Leon Johnson mustered 12 and shared the healthiest partnership of 38 for the third wicket with Nandu.

Permaul is not out on 11. Akeem Jordan and Harding picked up three wickets for 18 and 37 runs respectively while Jair McAllister and Shemar Springer took one wicket each.

The final day resumes at 10.00 hours.

At Coolidge Cricket Ground, West Indies player Rahkeem Cornwall produced a strong all-round performance to keep Leeward Islands Hurricanes with their noses in front against Jamaica Scorpions.

Cornwall claimed five for 54 as Scorpions, resuming on 186 for six in reply to Hurricanes’ 260, were dismissed for 234 in their first innings.

Abhijai Mansingh, unbeaten overnight on 34, made 56 off 176 deliveries with seven fours.

Armed with a lead of only 26 runs, Hurricanes needed Cornwall’s unbeaten 56 from 73 balls to end on 198 for seven – an overall lead of 224 runs heading into Saturday’s final day.

Montcin Hodge (31) and left-hander Kieran Powell (28) posted 55 for the first wicket before off-spinner Jamie Merchant (2-27) removed both.

West Indies batsman Keacy Carty (26) and Kofi James added 28 for the third but a slide saw three wickets go down for 25 runs, to give Scorpions the upper hand.

However, Cornwall put on 35 for the sixth wicket with Terrance Ward (4) and  further 32 in an unbroken eighth wicket stand with Hayden Walsh (13 not out), to bolster Hurricanes late in the day.
