GBA awards ceremony set for Wednesday

The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will stage its eagerly-awaited presentation ceremony Wednesday at the Mirage Lounge, Albert and Third Streets, Alberttown.

President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle told Stabroek Sports yesterday that the gala event will commence at 6pm.

The highlight of the evening’s proceedings, will be the presentation of awards to the most outstanding performers in 2022.

“This is a humble attempt to resurrect a storied tradition by the association to reward the individuals, athletes and officials to be specific, who have performed remarkably well and who have gone beyond the call of duty in the prior year,” he said.

“While the marquee presentations will include the Best Boxer, the Best Coach and the Best Official awards, several other notable awards will be presented at the gal ceremony,” Ninvalle added.

Topping the list is will be Sportsman-of-the-Year, Desmond Amsterdam, who is also the GBA’s Boxer-of-the- Year. The 30-year-old boxer, nicknamed Dynamite,

was indeed explosive in the ring winning a bronze medal at the AMBC tournament in Ecuador earning US$2500 and another bronze medal at the South American Games in Paraguay. Amsterdam, a sergeant in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will be joined by fellow GDF members Terrence Poole (M.S), who was voted the association’s Best Coach, and Jermain Craig, the GBA’s best Referee/Judge. Ninvalle said there will be other awards. “It is only fitting that the GBA recognizes the sterling performances that have been given last year,” he said adding that the ceremony will become an annual affair.
