Table leaders, Guyana Harpy Eagles resisted an onslaught from Windward Islands Volcanoes in fading light on the final day of their second round clash in the West Indies championship to earn a draw yesterday.

Matthew Nandu made 60

Resuming on 35 without loss and requiring a further 259 for victory at St. George’s, Grenada, Eagles managed to see off the Volcanoes’ bowlers to reach 259 for nine after 91 overs at the close of play.

It was Kevin Sinclair who managed to salvage the draw, hitting a career-best 77 not out. His over two hour-stay saw him soak up 138 balls and hit nine fours and one six which was hoisted over long off.

Sinclair, during his second first-class half-century, added 64 for the sixth wicket with Akshaya Persaud who came in as the concussion substitute for Chandrapaul Hemraj, who was struck on the head the previous day.

Persaud mustered 24 from 62 balls during his resistance but Eagles then lost four wickets for six runs.

However, a last wicket partnership of 39 between Sinclair and Ronsford Beaton ensured Eagles the stalemate. Beaton ended on one not out from 24 deliveries.

Earlier, Matthew Nandu, resuming on 18 converted his overnight score to 60 from 123 balls. Nandu, who scored a century on his first-class debut in the previous match, stroked seven boundaries before he was bowled by left-arm seamer, Preston McSween. The former West Indies Under-19 captain shared in a half-century stand with Tevin Imlach who made 25 from 62 balls before he was trapped leg before wicket to McSween.

Kemol Savory scored just seven before Kenneth Dember accounted for his wicket but skipper, Leon Johnson came to the crease and shared in a 55-run stand for the third wicket with Nandu. Johnson took the lead in that partnership, scoring 40 from 50 balls, hitting five fours and a six.

McSween ended with 3-58 while getting support from Justin Greaves (2-35) and Kaven Hodge (2-36). The tournament will now take a break before resuming round three in March.
