West Demerara heavyweight Slingerz FC defeated Monedderlust of Berbice 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the East Coast Mash Cup Football Championships Sunday evening at the Golden Grove ground.

A goal on either side of the half-time interval settled the outcome which was witnessed by a large crowd. Dexroy Adams broke the deadlock in the 13th minute. A flicked-on pass from forward Delon Lanferman fell into the path of the onrushing Adams who calmly slotted his effort past the advancing goalkeeper inside the penalty area.

The second conversion occurred in the 51st minute when midfielder Clive Nobrega made his presence felt. The goal could be deemed as somewhat fortuitous as an attempted one-two passing combination was missed by the defender in his attempt to thwart the danger, allowing Nobrega to slam his effort into the back of the net.

On Friday at the same venue, Pouderoyen defeated Buxton Stars 6-5 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 2-2 to earn their semi-final place. Prior to the eventual conclusion, Obadiah Yearwood bagged a brace in the 32nd and 71st minute for Pouderoyen while Clevis Barnwell recorded a double in the 19th and 59th minute respectively for Buxton Stars.

The tournament will resume on Thursday at the same venue with the semi-finals. At 19:00hrs, Slingerz FC will oppose Ann’s Grove, while Pouderoyen will match skills with Dynamic FC from 21:00hrs.

The winner of the tournament will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy, whilst the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will collect $250,000, $150,000, and $100,000 respectively, and the corresponding accolade.
