Five persons were left homeless on Friday after a fire at Number 64 Village, Corentyne.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) yesterday said that it received a call at 2.30 pm on Friday about the fire.

Water tender #101 from the Corriverton Fire Station responded to the scene where the fire had engulfed a two-storey wooden and concrete building.

The building was owned by Vilip Kumarnarine and occupied by 35-year-old Leonard Sandy and his family of four.

As a result of the fire, the building and its contents were destroyed, leaving five people homeless.

The fire was deemed to be the result of faulty electrical wiring in the building, which resulted in arcing and sparking, subsequently igniting nearby combustibles.

One jet working from Water Tender #101 tank supply and one jet from Light Pump #101 using an open water source were used to extinguish the fire.

Non Pariel

Meanwhile, at approximately 5.51 pm on Friday the GFS responded to a fire at Lot 359, Block 12, Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara.

Water tenders and a water bowser from the Melanie, Mahaica and Campbellville fire stations were immediately sent to the location.

The structure involved was a one-flat wooden and concrete building owned by 56-year-old Sarju Ramgobin and occupied by 26-year-old Alex Adams and his family of three.

The building and its contents were destroyed by the time the fire was extinguished, leaving four people homeless.

The purported cause of the fire is an electrical wire overloading, which caused the insulation to melt and subsequently ignite a foam mattress.

One jet, working from water carrier #16 tank supply, was used to put out the fire, the GFS said.
