Chandrika to captain Select XI

Former West Indies test player Rajendra Chandrika has been named captain of the Select XI which will compete in the Guyana Cricket Board’s Inter-County competition beginning Friday.

Chandrika played five Tests for West Indies between 2015 and 2016 and scored 140 runs in 10 innings.

The 33-year-old opener will have the services of young guns, Alvin Mohabir, Jonathan Rampersaud and Zeynul Ramsammy.

First-Class pacer, Demetri Cameron features in the squad as the only other national senior player in the side. Zachary Jodah, Rajendra Ramballi, Nathan Persaud, David Williams, Mark Gonzales, Sylus Tyndall and Kevin Umroa complete the squad that will be coached by Clive Grimmond and managed by Ravindranauth Seeram.

The selectors also named the Berbice squad. Berbice, who currently hold the 50-over title, will be looking to solidify their dominance over the other counties under the leadership of Guyana Harpy Eagles vice-captain, Veerasammy Permaul.

The line-up boasts a wealth of experience with the likes of West Indies players, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd and Kevin Sinclair in the mix.

Also featuring in the squad are national players, Anthony Bramble, Shamar Joseph, Nial Smith and Jonathan Foo along with former West Indies youth player, Kevlon Anderson and Guyana Amazon Warriors all-rounder, Junior Sinclair. Completing the squad is Tomanni Caesar, Adrian Sukhwa, Shamal Angel and Garfield Benjamin. The team will be coached by Julian Moore with Travis Harcourt as manager.

Also, Javed Karim, Seon Glasgow, Seon Hetmyer, Suresh Dhanai, Nigel Deodat and Kwesi Mickle were named as the reserves.

The Demerara and Essequibo squads were named on Monday.

With the squads complete, notable players that could not find places on the respective squads were national pacers, Clinton Pestano and Keon Joseph along with batsmen, Sherfane Rutherford, Vishaul Singh, Assad Fudadin and Trevon Griffith.

The three-round tournament will serve as preparation for the harpy Eagles’ final three rounds of the West Indies four-day Championship, which will resume on March 15.
