The Guyana Fire Service is currently investigating the circumstances that led to a blaze at Lot 6971 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, around 12:21 am on Monday.

Water tenders and carriers from Central, West Ruimveldt, Campbell-ville, and Alberttown fire stations responded to the scene, where firefighters saw a one-storey wooden and concrete building engulfed in flames. The family of eight is currently overseas and had left the home in the care of a caretaker who was not at the premises at the time of the fire.

A neighbour, Ryan Price, told Stabroek News that he and his family were asleep when they were suddenly awakened by the heat of the fire. Another neighbour who requested anonymity, also recalled that she and her family were asleep when she heard someone outside shouting that there was a fire and that they should get out at once. She said all they could do was take the curtains and run out the house.

Additionally, three buildings, all located on the northern side of the burnt out building were affected by radiated heat, resulting in damage to walls, ceilings, guttering, pipes, four plastic tanks, a washing machine, and a television.

Three jets working from Water Tenders#85 and #105, along with a water relay from Water Carrier #16 and a water bowser, were used to extinguish the fire. The building and its contents were completely destroyed.

Investigations are ongoing.
