Man charged with wounding Woodley Park Secondary student

A man has been charged with wounding a secondary school student after his son made a complaint to him.

Michael Kalamadeen was charged last Friday for unlawful wounding committed on the student of Woodley Park Secondary School, West Coast Berbice.

The accused appeared at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on February 24 before Magistrate Peter Hugh where he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $50,000.

Minister of Education Priya Manickchand has said that a recently concluded Regional Department investigation has determined that the incident which occurred at Woodley Park Secondary on February 17, was not racist.

Manickchand told Stabroek News in a telephone interview on Friday that an investigation by the Regional Department revealed that some children who were waiting for transportation to head home got into an altercation with a teenager after one child asked if he was drunk. This descended into an argument that included offensive name calling. The following day the teenager involved in the incident took his father to the school to defend him and parents got involved. The student was reportedly wounded as a result of Kalamadeen’s actions.
