Miner arrested with illegal firearm in Frenchman Backdam

Police on Tuesday arrested a gold miner who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at a makeshift camp in Region Ten.

According to a police release, on Tuesday, Anthony Waldron of Quan Street, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, had in his possession a .38 Taurus revolver (serial number unknown) and one live .38 round of ammunition. The 24- year-old gold miner, was at the time in Bamboo Area, Frenchman Backdam, Upper Demerara River, Region Ten.

The release said that based on information received, police ranks visited the Em-pire Mining Company’s base camp located at the aforementioned location. There Waldron, after being conrtacted by the ranks, led them to an area overgrown with thick vegetation situated about 10 feet from a makeshift camp. He showed them a piece of tree bark on the ground and informed that a firearm containing the ammunition could be found under the tree bark.

The firearm and ammunition were wrapped in a blue jersey contained in a black plastic bag. The suspect after being informed of the offence committed, was cautioned and opted to make an oral admission. Waldron was then arrested and taken to the Mabura Police Outpost along with the firearm and ammunition which was sealed and lodged.
