Canefield man on $250,000 bail following fatal accident

A Canefield, East Canje Berbice, truck driver was yesterday placed on $250,000 bail after he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving following an accident in January at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.

Dassrat Sookram, 47, appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh yesterday and was read the charge of causing death by dangerous driving. 

Victor Alert, 34, of Martin Street, Rose Hall, Corentyne was fatally struck by motor lorry, GZZ 4248 owned by Cevon’s Waste Manage-ment (Skip Bin Rental) which was being driven by the accused on the evening of January 10th.

Sookram was not required to plead to the charge and was placed on $250,000 bail.

He will return to court on April 5th for report. 

Stabroek News had previously reported that the truck was proceeding west along the southern drive lane along the Rose Hall Public Road when Alert suddenly ran across the road.

As a result of the collision, Alert fell on the southern lane and sustained injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
