At about 12:30 hrs on Thursday, police ranks were on a ‘Stop and Search’ exercise on the Fellowship Public Road, East Coast Demerara, when they stopped a motor car, HC 7522, and arrested a passenger who had in his possession over 10,000 grammes of suspected marijuana.

The vehicle was being driven at the time by a 47-year-old man from Lighttown Village, East Berbice. Four passengers were also in the car when police stopped it and carried out a search.

One of the ranks searched the suitcases belonging to one of the passengers, a 39-year-old construction worker of New Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, and discovered ten bulky parcels, all containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The man was told of the offence, arrested and cautioned. He admitted possession, saying ‘Red Man’ of Canje Berbice gave him the suitcase with the drugs to take to a man at Anns Grove, East Coast Demerara.

He was escorted to Mahaicony Police Station along with the suspected cannabis, which was weighed in his presence and amounted to 10,512 grams. The construction worker is in custody and is expected to be charged as investigations continue.
