Children whose fathers are residents of the state’s penitentiaries yesterday received kites in time for the Easter holidays, and had the opportunity for familial bonding with their fathers as the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) works towards fostering family connectivity through its Welfare and Corrections Department.

A GPS press release said that the kite making and distribution exercise will continue until April 7, at all prison locations.

The inmates are participants in the GPS’ Carpentry, Art and Craft programmes through which the kites were made for distribution. Welfare officers at all locations engaged the inmates to contact their relatives, and extended invitations to the children to receive their kites, the release said.

The GPS said it reminded families that their incarcerated relatives can still play a role in the lives of their children, particularly during holiday seasons. It added that the prison directorate is empowering inmates to be better partners, parents and citizens upon release by embracing the transition to the corrections.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot said the kite distribution exercise is in keeping with the prison service’s annual Easter tradition and will only boost family reconciliation upon release. Additionally, Officer in Charge of Prisoners’ Welfare and Corrections Marielle Bristol-Grant stated that the department’s intention was for children to retain good memories of their parents despite their current circumstances.
