Trinidad’s Campbell returning to defend NSC Three-stage road race title

The National Sports Commission (NSC) Independence Three-Stage road race which was scheduled to be held this weekend, has been postponed to next weekend to facilitate a smoother running of the event.

This is according to an executive member of the newly elected Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF).

The senior official stated that the Ministry of Sport and the NSC “is fully onboard” with the federation to make the long running event a success.

According to the official, he spoke to last year’s champion of the event, Akil Campbell of Trinidad and Tobago yesterday and Campbell disclosed that he will be returning to defend his title.

Along with the local standout wheelsmen, cyclists from Suriname and Barbados will also be invited to compete in  the two-day event said the official. The executive member further disclosed that this year’s prize money will be a record sum and the top performers will pocket prizes at the end of each stage.

Next Saturday, the 40th edition of the event gets underway from Corriverton to New Amsterdam from 07:30hrs.

The second stage, also on Saturday, will pedal off at 2:00 pm from Rosignol to Georgetown for the finish at Carifesta Avenue.

On Sunday, the third and final stage will commence from Kara Kara, Linden (from 7:30 am) to Homestretch Avenue.

Last year, Campbell, was declared the winner of the coveted award for the 39th edition of the prestigious event winning in a time of  7h:18m.19s.

Jamual John placed second overall in 7:22.32 while Team Evolution’s Curtis Dey placed third overall in 7:28.36.

Kemuel Moses (7:26.50), Jason Cameron (7:32.51) and David Hicks (7:32.54) filled out the top six overall rewarding positions. (Emmerson Campbell)
