Vendor fined $50,000 for assaulting another

Dexter Conway, a forty-five-year-old vendor of Lot 207 Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared virtually at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Magistrate Annette Singh to answer to the charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.

It is alleged that on Tuesday, May 16, at America Street, Georgetown, the defendant assaulted another vendor so as to cause actual bodily harm.

The court heard that both the defendant and the virtual complainant are known to each other.

At the time of the incident, the virtual complainant was washing the area around his place of work when the defendant approached him and said “I don’t see crosses”. The defendant later dealt the virtual complainant two cuffs to his head causing him to fall. He sustained injuries which caused his nose, shoulder and head to swell.

The virtual complainant later made a report to the police station and Conway was charged with the above mentioned offence.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and Magistrate Singh fined him $50,000 or two weeks imprisonment.

The defendant was also placed on a bond for one year.
