Persaud’s 152 gives Spartans massive win

A huge ton from national first-class batsman Akshaya Persaud handed Spartans Cricket Club a 209-run win over NYC 11 Stars in the New York National Cricket League Rockaway Premier Division tournament on Saturday.

At Flushing, Spartans won the toss and decided to bat first where they posted 327 for nine in 30 overs. Stars were restricted to 118 all out in 18.3 overs.

After losing two wickets by the third over, Spartans were back on track as Persaud joined Derick Narine to put on 83 for the third wicket. Persaud smashed 14 sixes and nine fours on his way to 152 from just 76 balls.

Narine on the other hand, made an even 50 from 33 balls with his inning laced with seven fours and one six.

Persaud then added 178 runs for the fourth wicket with Waqas Ali who went on to make 81 from 37 balls. His innings was highlighted by six sixes and seven fours. Extras contributed 16 while Javed Karim chipped in with 10.

Yudesh Shivprashad was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-39 while Gurdeep Singh took 2-53.

Stars could not generate the same momentum as Spartans, losing wickets at critical junctures with Karim (2-25) removing Stefan Rampersaud and Amrit Veer Singh in the first over as both failed to get off the mark.

Skipper Dwayne Shaw top scored with 44 from 39 balls, hitting three sixes and four fours along the way while Antanio Rooplal made 24 from 31 balls. Avinash Etwaroo was the only other batsman to reach double figures with 12. Extras accounted for 21. Wasim Haslim and Pranay Subra Das took three wickets each.
