Thirty-year-old Dwayne Lawrence, of Lot 2499 Ozama Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Annette Singh where he was jailed for one year after being charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

It was alleged that on Monday July 11, at Kitty Public Road, Georgetown, the defendant had in his possession a 9mm pistol when he was not the holder of a valid firearm licence.

The court was told that on the day in question, CID Special Patrol ranks, acting on information received, intercepted a burgundy Toyota Allion motorcar, PAB 1037, driven by Lawrence, on the Kitty Public Road in the vicinity of the Russian Embassy. The vehicle was searched but nothing illegal was found. A search was however, carried out on Lawrence’s person, and a 9mm Glock pistol and six matching rounds of ammunition were found in the crotch of his pants.

He was told of the offence committed, cautioned, then escorted to the Kitty Police Station along with the firearm and ammunition.

Lawrence was found guilty after a trial and sentenced to one year’s imprisonment.
