Yesterday at 7.40 pm, a Detective Inspector of Police traded gunfire with one of two men who were assaulting a  man on Hadfield Street.

No injury has been reported thus far.

The police in a statement last night said that the Inspector was with friends at the Millennium Manor Hotel and Bar,  located at Camp and Hadfield streets, when he observed two men approach another man who had emerged from a white motor car which was parked on the southern side of Hadfield Street.

The police say that the attackers dealt the man several cuffs about his body. On seeing that, the inspector and other persons at the said hotel shouted at the two men to desist and whilst they were going to the victim’s rescue, one of the men pulled out a silver hand gun from his pants waist and discharged three rounds in the direction of the Inspector and others.

“As a result, the Inspector drew his service 9mm pistol and discharged 5 shots in the direction of the two men who began to run in a southern direction. While doing so, one of the men dropped the firearm.

“The rank and others gave chase but the men managed to escape. The firearm was retrieved and it was observed to be a .32 Taurus pistol with a Magazine containing no ammunition”, the police said.

Efforts were also made to locate the victim that the men were cuffing but without success. Investigations are in progress.
