New Amsterdam police find revolver, ammo in supermarket compound

Police in New Amsterdam, Berbice yesterday discovered a revolver and ammunition in a supermarket compound.

According to a report, yesterday, between 03.20 hours and 03.45 hours, ranks acting on information went to J’s Supermarket at Essex Street, New Amsterdam where they discovered a .38 revolver and one live round of .38 ammunition.

A 29-year-old security guard attached to the supermarket related that he was on duty when he saw a man, Oswain Lawson, called ‘Blacka’ running towards the supermarket with an identifiable male and an identifiable female, chasing him.

The guard stated that he saw Lawson throw what appeared to be a firearm into the supermarket compound, and then was attacked by the identifiable male and female who dealt him several lashes about his body with a piece of wood, whilst enquiring about the firearm. Lawson, however, managed to run away and the identifiable male and female left in an unknown direction.

The police were immediately informed and ranks attended the J’s Supermarket, where they observed the .38 revolver and one live round of .38 ammunition. They took the firearm and ammunition to the Central Police Station, where they saw Lawson, who had gone there to make a report about the incident.

Lawson claimed that he and a man had a misunderstanding that led to a scuffle between them. A woman who was there with the man, pulled out what appeared to be a firearm from her waist, and as a result, Lawson hit her on the hand with a Guinness bottle, causing the firearm to fall to the ground.

Lawson said he picked up the firearm and ran through Essex Street, with the man and woman giving chase with pieces of wood in their hands. Lawson said as he ran through Essex Street, he threw the firearm into the supermarket compound. The man and woman caught up with him and dealt him several lashes about his body before he managed to escape.

Marks of violence could be seen on Lawson’s body, and police escorted him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for medical attention.

He is presently in police custody, assisting with the investigation.

Efforts by the police so far to locate the identifiable man and woman have proven futile.
