Swimmers find the going tough on opening day

It was a tough day at the pool for two of Guyana’s swimmers on the opening day of this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games now underway in Trinidad and Tobago.

Both Elliot Gonsalves and Ariel Rodrigues recorded commendable performances but were unable to progress following their respective heats at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva.

Gonsalves finished fourth in his 200m freestyle heat in 2:05.00, while Rodrigues finished second in the 50m butterfly in 30.54s.

Rodrigues returned to the pool and finished in sixth in the 200m freestyle in a time of 2:29.75.

The pair will continue their swimming campaign today along with Guyana’s other representative in the discipline, Shareefah Lewis.

Guyana is being represented in Swimming and Track and Field in the seventh edition of the Games where seven sports will be contested.

Track and Field action starts today at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of Spain.

Tianna Springer, Attoya Harvey, Narissa McPherson, Javon Roberts and Malachi Austin are the nation’s athletics representatives.
