Prison officer killed in hit-and-run at Swan

Shamal Charles, 22, a prison officer died following a hit-and-run accident on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway on Sunday evening. 

The police said that the details of the driver’s identity and vehicle’s registration number are yet to be determined.

Enquiries disclosed that around 6.50 pm on Sunday, a motor car was speeding south along the roadway. It was reported that Charles ran across the road into the path of the oncoming car which struck him. Charles, it was further reported, sustained injuries to his head and about his body. The motor car drove away.

Charles was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens, placed into a passing vehicle and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre on the East Bank Demerara where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to Charles’ father, Raymond Charles, a resident of Swan, his son, girlfriend and grandson visited him and he and Shamal attended a cricket game hosted at the Swan Ballfield. Later in the evening, Shamal and family departed Swan to return home at the Linden-Soesdyke junction.  Raymond recalled that while the three were waiting at Swan’s road head to cross over to the eastern carriageway of the Soesdyke/Linden highway, a speeding motorcar struck his son and drove away. Raymond said he is awaiting the results of the police investigation. The body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
