Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair and his wife, Cherie Blair, of the women’s empowerment non-profit organisation, the Cherie Blair Foundation, are expected to visit Guyana next week, a top government official has confirmed.

The government official yesterday told Stabroek News that the Blairs will be here next week. This newspaper understands that the visit is part of the work of the non-profit organisation.

The Cherie Blair Foundation has worked in Guyana with several organisations including Action Invest and on the HerVenture app which aims to help women in businesses learn about methods of online payments

With an aim to “revolutionise business opportunities for one million women by 2030,” the Cherie Blair Foundation says that it works to help create a “future where every woman and girl can enjoy equal economic opportunities so they can live to their full potential. Removing the barriers that women entrepreneurs face is a vital part of achieving that equality.”

On its website, the organisation explained that women entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries are held back by sexist laws, attitudes and practices, and to overcome these restrictions and create a gender-equal future for women entrepreneurs, it works in two interconnected ways. “They face barriers to obtaining business skills, financial literacy and resources for success like access to finance, markets and networks,” the website states.

“Working with our partners across the world we deliver on-the-ground and online programmes directly with women entrepreneurs. Our delivery partners are experienced entrepreneurship experts operating in low- or middle-income countries. They are essential to our work and support us to adapt our programmes to relevant local contexts. Our flagship programmes are designed to address the specific barriers that women entrepreneurs face. They support women to build knowledge, skills, confidence, and access to resources through tried-and-tested training, mentoring and networking opportunities,” it adds.

This year the organisation launched its “ambitious 2023-2026 organizational strategy ‘Ready for Business’”, alongside the new goal which it said is to revolutionise business opportunities for one million women entrepreneurs by 2030.
