Crawford can break Mayweather’s record

Former two-time national boxing champion Jeff Roberts is of the opinion that unified welterweight champion Terrence Crawford can be the boxer to break Floyd Mayweather’s record.

Roberts was speaking to Stabroek Sports in the aftermath of Crawford’s demolition of Errol `The Truth’ Spence in their recent welterweight showdown.

Crawford stopped Spence in their welterweight unification bout in the ninth round of a scheduled 12-round contest.

With the win Crawford is now the holder of the IBF World welterweight, WBA World super welterweight, WBC world welterweight and WBO World welterweight title belts.

“Crawford is 35-years-old He has 40 wins and no defeats. He can break or equal Floyd Mayweather’s 50 and 0, if he is guided in the right direction and is smart,” Roberts a former national bantam weight champion told this newspaper.

“In my opinion Terrence Crawford is the undisputed champion of the world and he will go on to beat many more great fighters,” Roberts opined.

Speaking of the fight, Roberts said that Crawford’s versatility was the key.

“Terrence `Bud’ Crawford is skillful, he can box, he can punch and most of all he’s versatile. He’s a complete fighter who will always beat Spence because he can adjust. Spence seemed lost once Crawford was able to neutralize his power as he did not have a plan B, so couldn’t adjust,” he declared.

According to Roberts, Crawford is a converted southpaw fighter. He is a right hander but converted to southpaw which means he can box both sides.

“He’s a good right-handed fighter and a good southpaw fighter which makes him versatile as he is equally good either style,” he opined.

On the other hand, Roberts says that Spence is a puncher and an aggressive fighter who always like to be in control which he was unable to do against Crawford.

“But I have seen him in other fights where when he gets hurt he seems confused. Spence’s strength is in his power and his aggression.

Asked who will win if there is a rematch Roberts said Crawford.

“I’m a Crawford fan all the time,” he said.
