Lee, Couchman among winners as XIV CAC Youth Chess Festival gets underway

Ronan Lee, FIDE rated 1357, won his match as the second round of the XIV CAC Youth Chess Festival in Trinidad and Tobago commenced yesterday.

Also winning were Dominic Sam and Ciel Clement in the second round and Kyle Couchman, FIDE rated 1343, and Italy Ton Chung in the first round, the Guyana Chess Federation reported.

Nicholas Zhang and Aniyah Couchman gained byes in the first round and Alexander Zhang and Kataleya Sam gained byes in the second round while Nicholas Zhang gained a draw in the second round.

The other players participating in the festival are Matthew Singh, and Kaija Clement.

The nine-round Swiss system tournament, which got underway Monday, will see over 200 players from 15 countries including Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica, Barbados and Suriname competing.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Haiti are fielding teams for the first time.

The tournament is being played at the Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s.
