Singh, Lee head chess team to CAC Youth Festival in T/dad

Some 11 young chess players are participating in the XIV CAC Youth Chess Festival in Trinidad and Tobago.

The players are Matthew Singh, Ronan Lee, Aniyah Couchman, Alexander Zhang,  Italy Ton Chung, Kyle Couchman (brother of Aniyah Couchman), Dominic Sam, Ciel  and Kaija Clement, Nicholas Zhang and Kateleya Sam.

According to the FIDE website, the categories to be contested are U8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 open and U8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 female.

GCF Secretary and Head of the Women in Chess Committee Marcia Lee is the head of the Guyana delegation while Roberto Neto is the coach.

The nine-round Swiss system tournament, which got underway yesterday, will see over 200 players from 15 countries including Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica, Barbados and Suriname competing.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Haiti are fielding teams for the first time.

The tournament is being played at the Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s.
