Hundreds collect land titles

Hundreds of persons yesterday poured into the Guyana National Stadium to collect titles to their land.

According to the Central Housing and Planning Authority, 629 titles were available to be collected.

Collin Croal, the Minister of Housing and Water, spoke with the Sunday Stabroek at the Building Expo, which is also taking place at the National Stadium, about the allocation of land titles.

“These are persons who would have signed up and gone through the process, made their payments and hence they could collect their title”, he said.

He related that he became emotional when speaking to some of the recipients of titles who had applied for years and were finally able to achieve the dream of land ownership in 2023.

Stabroek News spoke to some of the persons who received their titles yesterday.

Onika Stoby who  was teary-eyed said “I am happy to have received my title after a long time, I applied since 2005, I got it for my birthday I am so happy”.

Lisa Pakaram, in an interview with the Sunday Stabroek said “I applied since 2008, but today I feel very proud, I worked and got it off on my own, I have to work now to build”.

Ganga Ramlogan said that “I applied since in the 80’s, I am now 69 years old and now I get a title, Since I was a young man, I always thought I was not a Guyanese because it took me this long to achieve one of my biggest dreams, duh is disgraceful” .

He did however express his satisfaction at finally being able to get a land title despite his disdain for the extraordinarily long wait.

Shazim Haniff expressed his gratitude at finally being able to achieve his dream of owning his own house lot at the young age of 23. Haniff told the Sunday Stabroek that he applied in 2018 and now in 2023 he’s finally a holder of his own land title.
