‘Beast’ charged with murder of Rosignol businessman

Carlo ‘Beast’ Evans, a 32-year-old fisherman of Lot A Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice who was arrested on 24th August, 2023 by Guyanese police after he was extradited here by Surinamese authorities, was charged yesterday with murder in the course of or furtherance of a robbery of Rosignol businessman, Tony Bishnauth.

Evans who was detained by the Surinamese police since July 22, is alleged to have murdered Bishnauth on March 13, 2020, at Carriage Road, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice.

Evans appeared via Zoom at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Peter Hugh where the charge was read to him. He was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison until September 11 for statements.

A wanted bulletin had been issued for both Carlos and his brother, Medellin Evans, back on March 18, 2020 for the murder of Bishnauth who was shot and killed during a suspected robbery on March 13, 2020, at around 11 pm at Carriage Road, Rosig-nol, West Bank Berbice.

Seventy-eight-year-old Bishnauth, also known as ‘Uncle Tony’ and ‘England Man’, of Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Ber-bice, operated Sandra’s Snackette at the Rosignol Stelling Road, and was fatally shot in the region of his right ear during a robbery at the snackette.  Several other persons who were present celebrating the deceased’s 78th birthday were also shot and injured during the robbery. The investigation was spearheaded by ranks of the Guyana Police Force Major Crimes Unit.

Suriname’s media house, Waterkant, had reported back in 2022 that the brother of Carlos, Medellin, died after a stabbing incident on the Hoogestraat in Suriname on the evening of Septem-ber 24, 2022. According to the publication, Medellin got into an argument with the suspect, identified as Quinten M, who had allegedly owed him money, which he demanded. After the suspect refused to pay, Medellin reportedly pulled out a handgun and attempted to discharge a round. It was noted in the report that after “the gun did not fire,” the suspect then used a sharp object to stab Medellin multiple times about his body. The suspect was subsequently arrested at a fishing company in the Livorno Resort. “The investigation, in this case, has been transferred to the Capital Offences Department,” the report noted.
