Taxi driver charged with death of motorcyclist on Mandela Ave

Lloyd McKenzie, 52, appeared on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus where he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

McKenzie pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that on Friday, September 1, on Mandela Avenue and Cemetery Road, Georgetown, McKenzie drove motorcar, HD 3165, in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 33-year-old Martin Samuels.

The court heard that on the day in question, at about 7.15 am, the defendant, who was the driver of motorcar HD 3165, was proceeding east on Mandela Avenue and on his approach, the traffic signal at the intersection of Mandela Avenue and Cemetery Road was showing red in his direction. However, he failed to obey the signal and stop. Instead, he went beyond the white line and proceeded to negotiate a right turn to head south on Cemetery Road.

In the process of doing so he ended up in the path of motorcycle, CL 8097, which was proceeding west on Mandela Avenue. Subsequently, the motorcycle and car collided and as a result of the collision, the motorcyclist fell on the road and suffered injuries about his body. He was picked up in an unconscious state by EMTs and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

In court, the family members of the deceased decided that they no longer wished to proceed with the matter. “Your worship I understand everything that was said, but we wish to not proceed with the matter, let this man be free”, one of them said.

Following his not-guilty plea, McKenzie was granted bail in the sum of $300,000.

The matter has been adjourned to October 03.
