Berkley Stewart has passed away

Dear Editor,

Berkley Stewart, teacher and student of society, passed away on 4th September following several difficult months.  Known by his friends and almost everyone else by his last name, Stewart was a quiet, reflective man who was deeply interested in the world around him.

A sociologist by training and as an educator, Stewart taught for many years at the University of Guyana.  As a Fulbright Scholar, he chose to receive his Master’s Degree from Mississippi State University in the United States.  Stewart’s time in Mississippi immersed him—as a black youth—in a visceral experience of the American deep south.

Becoming a Baha’i later in life, Stewart was fascinated with the understanding of human society and civilization taught in the Baha’i writings.  The firm commitment of the Baha’i Faith to unity in diversity and opposition to racism were of particular importance to him.

His loving and inquisitive nature will be missed.

Yours faithfully,

David Perry, Georgetown
